Nuclear Generating Electricity

Duke Energy operates seven nuclear units in the Carolinas—three at Oconee Nuclear Station in Oconee County, South Carolina and two each at Catawba Nuclear Station in York County, South Carolina and McGuire Nuclear Station in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Nuclear power provides about half of the electricity used by our customers in the Carolinas.
The cost of generating electricity with nuclear power is stable and economical. That means as the prices for other power generation fuels escalate, Duke Energy rates remain basically the same.
In late 1967, Duke Energy began construction of Oconee Nuclear Station, its first commercial nuclear-fueled, steam-electric station. Oconee began operation in 1973. At full capacity, Oconee’s three units produce over 2,500 megawatts.
Duke Energy also operates the McGuire Nuclear Station and Catawba Nuclear Station. Each station has two nuclear units with a total generating capacity of over 2,200 megawatts.
Duke Energy has operated nuclear plants for more than thirty years. Our plants set industry benchmarks for safety and efficiency. All three nuclear stations operated by Duke Energy feature a visitor center, which provide a hands-on learning experience.
