Coal-Fired Generating Electricity

Coal-Fired Plant - Marshall

Duke Energy has eight coal-fired stations in the Carolinas. These eight power plants generate about half of the electricity used by our customers in the region.

We have been designing and building our own coal-burning plants in the Carolinas since 1925. And for more than three decades, Duke Energy has operated one of the nation’s most efficient fossil generating systems. This has meant lower operating costs for Duke Energy and lower electric rates for our customers.

We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously. In the Carolinas, Duke Energy effectively manages air emissions by using a diverse mix of fuels to generate electricity, operating efficiently and employing emission reduction technologies. As a result, our emission levels of nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide at our electric generating facilities are below the latest industry averages.
