Duke Energy: Giving To Its Communities In 2004
Duke Energy’s commitment to the community in 2004 continued to be strong with the company’s consolidated giving topping $27 million.
The total included $22.5 million in cash donations from the company and employees, matching gifts and in-kind donations, plus volunteer labor by employees and retirees valued at $4.5 million.
During the 2004 Global Service Event, employees and retirees tackled 523 service projects in North America and South America—with an estimated 9,000 volunteers lending a hand to people and organizations during the company’s 100 days of volunteerism.
Duke Energy responded with hurricane disaster relief in the southeast region of the United States, and launched a companywide response to the tsunami in South Asia.
Partnering with customers, the company’s Share the Warmth heating assistance generated more than $1 million for agencies in North Carolina and South Carolina. And Duke Energy’s bulk power marketing profit-sharing effort in the Carolinas generated $1.5 million for economic development and public assistance.
In addition, the company’s popular matching gifts program continued to enhance the hundreds of donations made by employees to eligible charitable organizations during 2004. Matching gifts totaled over $1.3 million.
Duke Energy’s efforts did not go unnoticed. In 2004, the company’s philanthropy and volunteer service were honored by such diverse groups as the Red Cross, Audubon International and Coastal America. The company was also honored by the Corporate Angels Network for providing unused seats on corporate aircraft to people who need special transportation for medical treatment.
These efforts—and many more—help define Duke Energy. We hope our communities value our citizenship as much as we value them.
